Undying Flame: Ballads and Songs of the Holocaust at Puffin: 10/1 8PM

How could an era of history so void of humanity as the Holocaust produce some of the most remarkable songs that haunt us to this day? What was there to sing about? Who composed the songs? Who sang? Who listened? On Saturday night, October 1st, at 8:00 PM at the Puffin Cultural Forum, folk singer Jerry Silverman will present a program of songs and readings from his book "The Undying Flame: Ballads and Songs of the Holocaust," in a search for the answers to these questions. The Forum is located at 20 East Oakdene Avenue (off of Teaneck Road) in Teaneck. There is a suggested donation of $5.00 at the door.

Jerry Silverman is one of America's outstanding folksingers, guitar teachers and most prolific authors of music books. He has published over 200 books, which have sold in the millions, including folk song collections, anthologies and method books for guitar, banjo and fiddle. He has taught hundreds and hundreds of people, young and old, the joys of making music on the guitar. He has performed in folksong concerts at schools, universities and concert halls in the U.S. and abroad.

During his performance the audience will be led on the terrible journey from the first Lager-Lied (concentration camp song) -- composed in the Börgermoor concentration camp in Germany in 1933 -- step by step through the inexorable and tragic events leading up to the Shoah, through the wartime years and up to the present. It is an eight-decade odyssey.

The songs sing of despair, hope, rage, resistance, and even humor, in the face of the unspeakable. Rare recordings of voices long still, salvaged from the abyss complement the live performance. After the presentation the members of the audience are invited to ask questions and offer comments. It has happened that survivors or children of survivors in the audience have first-hand recollections of the events recounted in some of the songs.

Silverman has utilized his extensive musicological and linguistic expertise in compiling and editing "The Undying Flame: Ballads & Songs of the Holocaust," a major work in the field of Holocaust scholarship, which contains 110 songs in 16 languages - Yiddish, German, Hebrew, Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, Ladino, Serbo-Croatian, Greek, Norwegian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Hungarian and English. The songs include the works of concentration camp prisoners and inhabitants of the ghettos of Eastern Europe as well anti-Fascist anthems inspired by the Spanish Civil War, Red Army songs and songs of Resistance fighters. Jerry Silverman's concert / lecture program based on the material in "The Undying Flame" presents many of these rare and moving songs for the first time ever. A CD of 14 songs is included with the book.

Among his best-selling books are "The Folk Song Encyclopedia" (a two-volume compilation of over 1,000 folk songs; words, music and guitar chords), "Ballads and Songs of the Civil War" (piano-vocal w/guitar chords), "The Guitar Player's Guide and Almanac" (a combined method book and survey of musical, technical and anecdotal information), "Of Thee I Sing" (patriotic American songs from the Revolutionary War to the present) and "The Undying Flame: Ballads and Songs of the Holocaust."

Library Friday Morning Group"65Years with theAP":9/30 10:30AM

Martin Lederhandler, a retired Associated Press (AP) photographer, will give a slide-talk entitled “Sixty-five years with the Associated Press at the September 30th meeting of the Teaneck Library Friday Morning Group at 10:30 AM

Mr. Lederhandler has been shooting historical events and legendary figures for most of the 20th century and in doing so has become a legend himself.. Winston Churchill, Nikita Khrushchev, Fidel Castro, Haile Selassie, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, The Rosenbergs, mayors from Fiorello LaGuardia to Rudy Giuliani and every president from Herbert Hoover (retired) to Bill Clinton are just a sampling of people captured by Lederhandler's lens and his photographs have made front page news around the world.

Marty and his older brother, Harry, got into cameras as a teen-age hobby during the depression. He joined AP full-time in 1936 - his career was launched as he strolled across the George Washington Bridge and shot an award winning photograph of the cables stretching across the Hudson, for which he received $3.00. Lederhandler's career paralleled the march of technology from heavy, cumbersome Speed Graphics to high-speed film and motor-driven 35-mm cameras - and recently, to digital cameras.

Drafted by the Army in 1940, Lederhandler landed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division on June 6th, 1944. From his haunting images of the D-Day invasion to his photographs of the attack on the World Trade Center which made the cover of New York magazine and the cover of “September 11, 2001,” a best-selling book published by the magazine, Lederhandler has been an eyewitness to history.

The public is welcome to attend this free program to be held in the library auditorium and to the coffee and socializing session that precedes it at 10:00 AM. Star Ledger 9/29: N.J. Unit Brings Joy to 'Adopted' Iraqi Schools

As reported in today's Star Ledger, troops from the New Jersey Army National Guard's 50th Main Support Battalion, based at the Teaneck Armory, have been building relationships with schools (and their students and staff) in the Iraqi city of Tikrit, a city probably best known as the birthplace of Saddam Hussein. Soldiers from the unit are due to return to the US, and to Teaneck, in the next several weeks. See the article in today's Star Ledger or click on http://tinyurl.com/7zzcn for the item at the http://www.NJ.com web site.

N.J. unit brings joy to 'adopted' Iraqi schools Thursday, September 29, 2005 BY WAYNE WOOLLEY Star-Ledger Staff

TIKRIT, Iraq -- The little girl with the peach-colored dress and the Mickey Mouse flip-flops had run to the front gate of the Al Barudy Primary School before the first armored Humvee rolled to a stop.

By now, she knew what would be coming next: soldiers from the 50th Main Support Battalion carrying plastic bags stuffed with toys, and boxes overflowing with clothes and sneakers.

For members of the Teaneck-based New Jersey Army National Guard unit, the little girl's reaction this week was an indicator of the inroads they have made in just three visits to school they "adopted."

When the soldiers made their first visit to the school in February, no one emerged from the stone building to greet them, and the children seemed to relax only when they realized the troops weren't there to search for insurgents.

"By now, they know why we're here and they're glad to see us," said Capt. Richard Aviles, 35, of Rutherford. "Helping the schools was the most rewarding experience I've had here. I feel like I contributed something to this country."

The support battalion's main mission in Iraq is to haul goods, fix equipment and run a medical clinic for soldiers.

But its troops also took on the job of trying to improve relations with the Sunni Muslim residents of northern Tikrit by adopting the primary school and the Al Barudy School for Girls a few blocks away.

Missions like these fall under the heading of civil affairs and are expected of most units serving in Iraq.

The soldiers of the support battalion and its higher headquarters, the division support command of Somerset, say they've been glad to do it. The mission yesterday was the final visit to the two schools before the soldiers are scheduled to begin returning to the United States next month.

"This was the best day I've had in Iraq," Col. William Rochelle of Brick Township, commander of the division support command, said after the 84 soldiers involved in the mission returned to their base.

Most of the items the soldiers have delivered to the schools -- toys, toiletries, clothes and school supplies -- came from donations from around the United States. The most recent shipments bore postmarks from Red Bank, Milan, Minn., and dozens of points in between.

When the soldiers arrived at the first school, they unloaded the bags in a wide courtyard in the center of the school grounds. Chaos soon followed as children spilled out of classrooms and made a mad dash for the goods.

After noticing that one of the teachers was expecting a baby, Master Sgt. Minnie Hiller, the battalion's family-support coordinator, fished through the bags to find a pair of baby shoes and tiny sweater she knew were packed in the pile.

As the children swarmed around her, Hiller said the final visit was well-timed. Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, begins next week.

"To see the looks on these kids' faces is amazing," Hiller said. "For us to be here near the beginning of their holiday is even nicer."

In addition to the delivery of the packages, the support battalion made good on promises they had made to the headmistresses of each school on their first visit.

Both had asked for cabinets to store books and the soldiers arrived with four large wooden cabinets that unit members had made. The soldiers also delivered a swing set and seesaw to the primary school that welding experts from the unit had constructed.

The battalion also brought along a soldier and a defense contractor with the authority to follow through on other promises made on the first visit but that weren't fulfilled because the 42nd Infantry Division, which is responsible for all U.S. military operations in north central Iraq, ran out of civil affairs funds.

The primary school headmistress asked for an additional classroom and the girls' school headmistress asked for a concrete wall to be constructed around its building.

"We should be able to do that," said Maj. Dep Davis, a Missouri National Guard soldier assigned to the Department of Defense agency responsible for reconstruction projects in Iraq.

The troops spent about 20 minutes at the first school delivering supplies before taking a five-minute ride to the second school, where they stayed about 10 minutes.

The neighborhoods around the schools have single-floor cinder-block homes next to opulent two-story homes with colorful ceramic tiles on the windows and balconies.

On the first visit to the schools in February, at least several shots were fired at the battalion's convoy from the neighborhood. They haven't been shot at in the neighborhood since.

After the mission was over and the troops returned to their base, several gathered around a laptop computer and watched a video of the children ripping into the presents.

Hiller, who will return to the United States a few weeks before the rest of the battalion, said she will show the video to the soldiers' families.

"I want the families to see what these soldiers are doing over here," she said. "If they didn't do anything else, they made a difference at these schools."

Record 9/28: Cultural Arts Coalition Disbands in Teaneck

As reported in today's Record, the board of the Teaneck Cultural Arts Coalition has decided to disband, As such, there won't be a First Night 2006, the annual community celebration of the arts that had been organized by the TCAC. See today's Record or click on http://tinyurl.com/arawv for the item at the Record's http://www.Bergen.com web site (registration required).

Cultural Arts Coalition disbands in Teaneck Wednesday, September 28, 2005 By BRIAN ABERBACK STAFF WRITER

TEANECK - The Cultural Arts Coalition has disbanded after eight years of producing concerts, arts festivals and First Night events.

"We just didn't have the pool of volunteers that we once had," said Lauren Hooker, a co-founder of the non-profit, volunteer organization. "It's just hard to keep the momentum going. We're a very active group. People get busy with their lives."

Hooker, a jazz vocalist, started the coalition with five fellow Teaneck residents to give township artists a venue for sharing their talents with the community, and to foster cultural diversity through the arts.

In a few years, the group had grown exponentially, to the point that non-residents were joining to help stage concerts, arts and music festivals and productions, including a popular yearly Young People's Concert.

The group also resuscitated First Night Teaneck in 1998.

In February the Teaneck Advisory Board on Community Relations awarded the coalition its yearly Matthew Feldman Award for Community Service.

But the coalition could not overcome a loss of volunteers and funding, and the group dissolved this month.

Several key members stepped down recently, and the coalition has less than $10,000 in its treasury, Hooker said. It costs $60,000 to produce First Night alone, she said.

After the group pays its outstanding bills, its remaining funds will be given to Bergen County as reimbursement for a grant that was not used, Hooker said.

The group's dissolution means there will not be a First Night 2006.

Mayor Jacqueline Kates said the township does not have the resources or funds to sponsor a First Night event on its own, but would be happy to work with any other volunteer groups that take over the event.

Kates said the coalition made a positive impact on Teaneck and would be missed.

"Programs and services that pull people together are so important in any community," Kates said, "especially in Teaneck, where we have a large and diverse community."

Hooker said her disappointment in the group's demise is tempered by the success it achieved.

"I think we helped to build an awareness of how rich [artistically] this whole area is, especially Teaneck," Hooker said. "And how diverse we are in terms of our ethnicity, religions and ages, and the variety of artists."

Hooker added that she has no doubt the township will continue to embrace the arts through several outlets.

"We still have a host of different presenters," Hooker said, "from the Puffin Cultural Forum to the Friends of the Library to the Rodda Center."

Record 9/27: Zisa Wants High Court to Rule on Baer's Seat

As reported in today's Record, Ken Zisa is asking the New Jersey Supreme Court to review Friday's Appellate Court ruling that could lead to five sealed ballots being counted in favor of Loretta Weinberg in voting to fill Byron Baer's vacated Senate seat. Judge Doyne has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday morning, barring any Supreme Court actions. See today's Record or click on http://tinyurl.com/8l6jx for the complete text of the article at the Record's http://www.Bergen.com web site (registration required).

Zisa wants high court to rule on Baer's seat Tuesday, September 27, 2005 By SCOTT FALLON STAFF WRITER

Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa asked the state Supreme Court on Monday to overturn an appellate panel's ruling that could allow Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg to succeed retired state Sen. Byron Baer.

The state's highest court had not decided whether it would rule on the case as of late Monday afternoon, a spokeswoman said.

In papers filed with the top court, lawyers for Zisa and the Bergen County Democratic Organization argued that Superior Court Judge Peter Doyne was correct when he declined to count five disqualified votes that could have given Weinberg the seat at a county party convention.

The filing came less than 72 hours after the appeals court reversed Doyne's ruling.

The panel ruled that the county organization's more stringent filing deadline for county committee voters did not supersede the state's own deadline.

The names were supposed to be forwarded to party leaders at least 30 days before a special election under the organization's bylaws. But state law says only that voters who are appointed within seven days of a special election can be barred.

It also said that the courts can get involved in intra-party matters.

"There is established law in regards to courts staying out of local political party elections," Zisa said. "We think [Doyne] ruled appropriately."

The five voters said they cast their ballots for Weinberg, D-Teaneck, at the Sept. 15 election.

Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Fair Lawn, who oversaw the election, disqualified the ballots because the voters' names were brought to the organization the day before the election. Rothman said there would likely be errors and fraud if everyone withheld their names until the eve of a special election.

Zisa won, 114-110, to fill Baer's seat through November and 112-111 to be on the Election Day ballot.

Doyne has scheduled a hearing for 9 a.m. Wednesday pending any action from the Supreme Court.

"Everybody's got a right to their legal remedies," Weinberg said of the filing. "We are obviously going to make case law when this is all over."

The Zisa-Weinberg conflict pitted U.S. Sen. Jon S. Corzine, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate and supporter of Weinberg in the matter, against Bergen County's influential party chairman, Joseph A. Ferriero, who backed Zisa.

Record 9/25: Ridgewood Preserves 1-point Edge vs. Teaneck

As reported in Sunday's Record, the Teaneck Highwaymen fell just short to Ridgewood at home Saturday night, falling by a score of 21-20. See the Sports section of Sunday's Record or click on http://tinyurl.com/93zow for the item at the Record's http://www.Bergen.com web site (registration required).

Ridgewood preserves 1-point edge Sunday, September 25, 2005 By DAN ROSEN STAFF WRITER

TEANECK - Late in the fourth quarter, its lead trimmed to one point and with Teaneck driving across midfield, it was clear Ridgewood needed a big play.

Junior outside linebacker Dan Lenihan was ready to play hero.

"We've practiced it since double sessions in the summer," Lenihan said. "We need to be tough at the end of the game."

No one was tougher than Lenihan on the two plays that mattered most. Because of his pressure in Teaneck's backfield, Ridgewood escaped with a 21-20 victory Saturday night. The Maroons, ranked 15th in The Record's Top 25, are now 2-1 despite missing five senior starters - they have only 13 seniors on the roster - because of injury Saturday night.

"What a win for these kids," Ridgewood coach Chuck Johnson said. "How many teams can lose almost half of their seniors and still beat a team like this?"

It's likely Teaneck junior quarterback Travis Warren won't forget Ridgewood's No. 56 any time soon.

On second-and-15 from Ridgewood's 35-yard line, Lenihan broke through and dropped Warren for a 5-yard loss with 1:38 left. The next play, he again got pressure on Warren, forcing him to throw a pass short of his receiver that was intercepted by senior A.J. Torre, ending the drive and Teaneck's hopes.

"It's make a play there, and he's the guy that epitomizes the defensive player you want to have," Johnson said of Lenihan, who is 6 feet 2 and 215 pounds. "He's athletic and he's smart. He can be a tremendous football player."

The methodical offensive game, which Ridgewood led, 21-14, at halftime, turned into a battle of field position in the second half. The half was scoreless until Teaneck (0-2) scored with 3:54 to play in the game as sophomore tailback Rashad White (137 rushing yards) ended a 16-play, 82-yard drive with a 7-yard cutback run for a touchdown.

However, Teaneck then realized the burden of special teams. The snap for the extra-point attempt never got into the air. It trickled along the ground, Ridgewood fell on the ball and its one-point lead was intact.

"I don't know what happened," Teaneck coach Dennis Heck said. "The ball slipped or it stuck. You see it happen in the NFL all the time. We kick them like they're nothing in practice, but we get into a game and we don't."

Teaneck appeared to steal the momentum with a game-tying touchdown pass from Warren to senior fullback Jerome Brigham (five catches, 76 yards) just 1:41 before halftime. However, after letting the Highwaymen march 58 yards for the score, Ridgewood gained it right back as senior Michael Nunn returned the kickoff 59 yards to the Teaneck 29.

One play later, sophomore quarterback Greg Johnson sailed a fade pass to junior Brian Albano for a touchdown.

FDU Film"Dr. Strangelove"at Weiner Library: 9/25 1PM

The Weiner Library at Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Fort Lee Film Commission are sponsoring a four-part film series beginning in September. The Film Commission selected the films to be shown based on their popular appeal and on the collections at FDU and the Commission. The series is free and open to the public.

The first film in the series is the satirical and provocative black comedy "Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” It will be shown on Sunday, September 25th at 1:00 PM in the Weiner Library Auditorium, located at 1000 River Road in Teaneck, across from Phelps Park. Click on http://tinyurl.com/26vc2 for a map of the campus, where the Weiner Library is identified as building 12.

"Dr. Strangelove," produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, stars Peter Sellers and George C. Scott with James Earl Jones. It is a hot-line suspense comedy in which an insane general starts a process to nuclear holocaust that a war room of politicians and generals frantically try to stop. The film won the NY Film Critics Circle Award for Best Director Stanley Kubrick and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written Comedy, but lost out to "My Fair Lady" for Best Picture Oscar in the 1965 awards ceremony.

The Fort Lee Film Commission is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 to raise funds to preserve films made in Fort Lee and to work with filmmakers who support promotion of Fort Lee's role as the birthplace of the American film industry.

Record 9/24:

As reported in today's Record, an Appellate Judge ruled on Friday to send Teaneck Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg's case back to Superior Court where the judge will have to reconsider the status of the five uncounted votes. Inclusion of these five ballots -- all of which were cast for Weinberg -- would put her over the top for both the interim seat and the November ballot spot. See today's Record or click on http://tinyurl.com/cvvxc for the item at the Record's http://www.Bergen.com web site (registration required).

Appellate court favors Weinberg Saturday, September 24, 2005 By SCOTT FALLON STAFF WRITER

After a week of legal wrangling, Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck, may still have a shot at Byron Baer's vacated state Senate seat.

A state appellate panel on Friday sent her election case back to Superior Court Judge Peter Doyne, who refused to count five disqualified votes that could have given her the victory over Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa.

The panel reversed Doyne's ruling that the Bergen County Democratic Organization's more stringent filing deadline for county committee voters superseded the state's own deadline.

The five votes in the Sept. 15 county committee special election were disqualified because the voters' names were not forwarded to party leaders at least 30 days before a special election. But state law says only that voters who are appointed within seven days of a special election can be barred.

The self-dubbed "Tenafly Five" - all of whom said they voted for Weinberg - were appointed in June.

Zisa won, 114-110, to fill Baer's seat through November and 112-111 to be on the Election Day ballot.

The appellate panel also said Doyne erred when he declined to interfere in an internal party conflict.

Doyne had not scheduled another hearing as of late Friday afternoon.

The panel ruled that the printing of ballots in the 37th District must be delayed until the hearing.

Weinberg called the ruling "a huge win."

"Judge Doyne has to decide was there a meeting and were these five members" appointed, she said. "They're good, honest people who didn't have their paperwork together. It's a very big win."

Zisa said he will meet with his attorneys to figure out what to do next. "Obviously, we disagree with the latest ruling," he said.

Record 9/22: Teaneck Eases Rent Control Rules

As reported in today's Record, with the prospect of controls being entirely eliminated, Teaneck's Township Council approved a compromise rent-control ordinance at Tuesday's Council meeting that will implement full vacancy decontrol, increase limits on annual rent rises and replace the Rent Board with a township administrative officer. See today's Record or click on http://tinyurl.com/7s5zs for the full text of the article at the Record's http://www.Bergen.com web site (registration required).

Teaneck eases rent control rules Thursday, September 22, 2005 By BRIAN ABERBACK STAFF WRITER

TEANECK - The Township Council made several changes to the town rent-control ordinance on Tuesday, capping a nearly yearlong debate among the council, landlords and tenants.

The major change involves eliminating any restrictions on the amount landlords can raise the rent on vacant apartments.

Other significant changes include a raise in the yearly rental increase allowance and replacing the volunteer rent board with an administrative officer, likely the township manager, to hear landlord-tenant disputes. The changes go into effect Nov. 1.

The council voted 5-1 on the revisions after a 2½-hour public hearing attended by about 125 people. The issue came to the fore in October, when a landlords group began lobbying the council for changes to the ordinance. Tenants fervently fought the changes.

"I believe we reached a fair compromise after hours of discussion and listening," said Councilman Paul Ostrow. "The council carefully evaluated every aspect of the rent ordinance and its economic, sociological and legal impact upon tenants, landlords, homeowners and municipal services."

The alternative was abolishing rent control altogether. The rent ordinance must be readopted each year, and there likely would not have been enough votes to renew it without instituting vacancy decontrol.

Mayor Jacqueline Kates, Deputy Mayor Deborah Veach and Councilwoman Monica Honis did not want to give landlords vacancy decontrol.

But Ostrow and Councilman Yitz Stern would not vote for an ordinance without that provision and Councilman Michael Gallucci would not vote for any form of rent control. Councilman Elie Y. Katz recused himself from the vote because he is a landlord.

"It's a very difficult compromise," Kates said. "I did not want to see that ordinance die. That's how I look at it."

Landlords are currently allowed to increase the rent on vacant apartments by a maximum 10 percent, and only once every two years. Under the revised ordinance, yearly rent increase restrictions will still apply once a vacant apartment is rented.

Landlords said the changes, especially vacancy decontrol, will bring much-needed revenue increases. They said that rising fuel, insurance and utilities costs have prevented them from maintaining their properties at an optimum level.

Arnold Litt, the attorney for the landlords group, said that the situation has led to depreciated property values for apartments, which in turn has resulted in higher property taxes for homeowners.

"Rent control resulted in the stagnation of the economic fiber of this town," Litt said. "This is a monumental change."

Tenants and their advocates also say the changes are epic, as in a colossal disaster. They say landlords have shown no proof of their financial woes, and that a study they presented on rent control's effect on property taxes is flawed.

Renters, especially working-class families and the elderly, will not be able to handle the increases, tenant advocates said.

"Everybody's in a pinch," said Mitchell Kahn, vice president of the New Jersey Tenants Organization and executive director of the Bergen County Housing Coalition.

"The landlords say fuel is going up 40 percent. Do you think [tenants'] Social Security checks are going up 40 percent a year?" Kahn asked.

Several tenants who attended the meeting Tuesday said that if the landlords are suffering, they should open their books and apply for a hardship increase, which the ordinance provides. No one has applied for a hardship increase in the past decade.

In response, one landlord said to the audience, "Why don't [tenants] show us their tax returns?"

Kates said she worries that working-class families who want to move into town and elderly residents who want to sell their homes and move into apartments will not be able to afford it once vacancy decontrol takes effect.

"The emergency that was the justification for starting rent control in 1973, providing affordable housing, still exists," Kates said. "If anything, there is less affordable housing in town now."

But Stern said another dire situation is also present: "We're missing out on ratables" because of the depreciated property values, Stern said. "It is my responsibility as an elected official to represent all the taxpayers of the town."

The volunteer rent board was abolished because of a lack of work - until last year the board had not heard a case in 10 years - and because the council felt the township manager would handle the complaint process more smoothly.

"The complaints will be handled much more expeditiously, as far as the resources the manager has at her disposal," Kates said.

Teaneck is one of about 120 towns in New Jersey, including some 30 in Bergen and Passaic counties, that have some form of rent control. It was considered to have some of the most tenant-friendly regulations in the state.

Record 9/22: Weinberg to Appeal Loss in Party Vote

Appellate Division or bust, Teaneck Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg will challenge Tuesday's court ruling that kept five ballots from last Thursday's Bergen County Democratic Committee caucus uncounted, as reported in today's Record. See today's Record or click on http://tinyurl.com/cwt2b for the article at the Record's http://www.Bergen.com (registration required).

Weinberg to appeal loss in party vote Thursday, September 22, 2005

Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg said Wednesday she will appeal a judge's refusal to count five disqualified votes that could have given her Byron Baer's vacated state Senate seat.

Although Wednesday was the last day to change the Nov. 8 ballot, the Teaneck Democrat said her lawyers would argue that the deadline should be extended, much as it was in 2002, when Frank Lautenberg replaced Robert Torricelli on the ballot for a U.S. Senate seat.

"This is just a district election, not statewide, and we have more time than was the case with Lautenberg," Weinberg said.

"If we're going to have any reform movement [in the Democratic Party], we've got to have the courts on our side," she said.

In his ruling Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Peter Doyne said he wouldn't open the ballots because he was reluctant to interfere with intra-party conflicts. The decision upheld Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa's narrow win in a party election to fill Baer's seat through November and also be the Democratic nominee on Election Day.

Zisa said he was disappointed with Weinberg's decision.

"I was hoping we could focus on November," he said.

Weinberg said she would take the case no further than the Appellate Division.

Record 9/21: Prostitution Suspects Caught After Window Leap

As reported in today's Record, three employees of a Queen Anne Road "massage parlor" were arrested, including two who ere caught after jumping out a window to evade police. All were charged with prostitution-related offenses. See today's Record or click on http://tinyurl.com/abzno for the article at the Record's http://www.Bergen.com web site (registration required).

Prostitution suspects caught after window leap Wednesday, September 21, 2005

TEANECK - Two massage therapists who allegedly doubled as prostitutes leapt from a second-story window during a police raid but were caught soon afterward, authorities said Tuesday.

Police had pulled up Monday afternoon to a split-level home in a commercial section of Queen Anne Road when the two women kicked out a window screen and dived 10 feet, said Lt. Dean Kazinci. The women, as well as an office manager, were apprehended shortly afterward.

Kazinci said police raided the home - which went by the name Herb Center - after two undercover investigators were solicited there on separate occasions.

"We kind of stumbled onto this one," Kazinci said.

Investigators had been referred to the home after calling a phone number listing in a classified newspaper advertisement for another massage parlor, he explained.

A meeting was arranged, and the undercover officers were met by an office manager, who charged $60 for a massage, Kazinci said. The detectives were then escorted to a room where the masseuses allegedly offered them sex for $40 to $100, he said.

The same house had been raided in 1997. In that case, Elsy G. Lazo - who later pleaded guilty to promoting prostitution - also jumped out of the second-story window.

"This was one of those cases where it was deja vu," Kazinci said.

The alleged jumpers, Irma Tapia, 25, and Chui Wong, 23, both of New York City, were charged with prostitution. The office manager, 23-year-old Tendri Angka of Queens, was charged with promoting prostitution.

Angka and Tapia were released on their own recognizance. Because Wong's name could not be verified, she was being held on $1,000 bail Monday at the Bergen County Jail.
