The Garage Theatre Group and North Jersey Media Group Foundation have organized a Hurricane Katrina Benefit Concert: An Evening of Music from Artists Who Care to take place on Friday, September 23rd at 8:00 PM at The Becton Theatre, Fairleigh Dickinson University, located at 960 River Road in Teaneck, across from Phelps Park. Click on http://tinyurl.com/26vc2 for a map of the Metropolitan Campus, where the Becton Theater is identified as Building 14.
An Evening of Music from Artists Who Care promises to be an exceptional evening of entertainment for the audience while fulfilling an urgent need. With the appearance of world-renowned musicians, the goal of this benefit is to raise $10,000.00, with the net proceeds donated to the Bush/Clinton Hurricane Katrina Fund.
The line-up of artists so far includes Roni Ben-Hur, winner of the JAZZIZ 2000 Readers Poll for Best New Talent and a favorite of jazz critics since his emergence on the scene in the 1990’s. This guitarist, composer, arranger, teacher, and author has just released his fourth and most compelling CD, Signature; Tom Chapin, whose contemporary folk and pop music spans styles and generations. Tom works tirelessly for many charitable organizations; Demien DeSandies; Calvin Hill, a world-class bassist, arranger, composer and educator, who has performed with McCoy Tyner, Pharaoh Sanders, Max Roach and others; The Jambalaya Brass Band, New York City's premier 2nd line brass band - kickin' it hard with a flavor straight from the streets; Carmen Jon, the man with the golden voice; Amy London; and Gail Lou, a vocalist, musician, lyricist, award-winning composer, writer, actor, and musical director. Gail performed as Billie Holiday in The Garage Theatre Group world premiere production of Billie; Shawn Lucas; and Joe Sciaronne. Additional artists will be added.
Local firms are donating their services to this benefit. Best Western of Hackensack has agreed to furnish rooms for the performers. J&H Soho of Hoboken and Image Ink of Cresskill are donating the printing of flyers, tickets and posters. Design of printed work is by Iron Horse Graphics of Englewood.
Tickets for An Evening of Music from Artists Who Care are $30.00. They can be purchased online or by calling the box office at 201-569-7710. A silent auction for a collection of professionally taken photographs of New Orleans will also be held.
