Washington's Army in Bergen County at Steuben House: 9/25 4PM
For two weeks in September of 1780 George Washington and 17,000 troops were encamped along the ridge encompassing present-day River Edge and Oradell. This was the Steenrapie encampment. On Sunday, September 25th, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, the Bergen County Historical Society presents a series of lectures about this encampment and life in Bergen County at this time period.
Todd Braisted will discuss why Washington's Army was in Bergen County, provide a strategic overview of the 1780 Campaign that brought them there and describe some of the activities of the troops at that time and the effects of the encampment and foraging on the local inhabitants. Andrew Anderson will speak on the correspondence of Washington and his staff, headquartered in the Zabriskie-Steuben House. Kevin Wright will speak on Historic New Bridge Landing, what it was like in 1780 and what we hope it will become. The September 25th lecture will be held at the Steuben House in River Edge at Historic New Bridge Landing Park at 4:00 PM.
