FDU Men's Soccer vs. Quinnipiac:11/6 1PM

After a 1-0 victory vs. Central Connecticut on Friday, the Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team closes out its regular season as they host Northeast Conference rival Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon, November 6th, at 1:00 PM at University Stadium in Teaneck.

Library Friday Morning Group"ToKill aMockingbird":10/28 10:30AM

The Teaneck Public Library Friday Morning Group will host a lecture and discussions with Bill Levy, B. A., M. A., of Harper Lee's classic "To Kill a Mockingbird," the 2005 One Book New Jersey featured adult book, on October 28th at 10:30 AM.

Critics' response to "To Kill a Mockingbird" was mixed; a number of critics found the narrative voice of a nine-year-old-girl unconvincing and called the novel overly moralistic. Nevertheless, in the racially charged atmosphere of the early 1960's, the book became an enormous popular success, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and selling more than 15 million copies. The book remains a staple of high school and college reading lists, beloved by millions of readers worldwide for its appealing depiction of childhood innocence, its scathing moral condemnation of racial prejudice, and its affirmation that human goodness can withstand the assault of evil.

Levy taught for 31 years in public schools and New York City and Hopatcong. In 1998, he wrote a widely praised book on one of American's greatest directors, "John Ford, A Bio-Bibliography." Levy is a speaker on many topics including vintage movies, the Academy Awards, and how to use humor to combat daily stress. Last, but not least, Levy is one of Americana Lecturer's featured speakers on Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" and the 2005 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Fiction, "Gilead," by Marilynn Robinson.

The public is welcome to attend this free program to be held in the library auditorium and to the coffee and socializing session that precedes it at 10:00 AM. Teaneck Farmers' Market at Beverly & Garrison Parking Lot: Concludes 10/27

The Teaneck Farmers' Market concludes for the 2005 season on Thursday, October 27th and will be open from Noon to 7:00 PM, rain or shine. Shoppers can visit the market, at the parking lot off Cedar Lane at Garrison Avenue & Beverly Road and take advantage of the final opportunity to experience the freshest produce grown in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Growers will be bringing seasonal vegetables and fruits along with fresh herbs, jams, plants, cut flowers, fresh eggs, as well as mozzarella cheese and home-made baked goods.

Many familiar farmers have returned along with new growers and vendors to provide even more choices than before. The farms visiting the Teaneck Farmers' Market include: Stone Pointe Farms, Greenwood Farms, Bueno Vista Farms and freshly baked goods, pickles, relishes, jams, honey and cheeses from Amish Country Bakery.

Flood Relief Concert for Habitat for Humanity: 10/26 8PM

On Wednesday, October 26th, at 8:00 PM, Cedar Lane Cinemas in Teaneck will host a Flood Relief Concert featuring Classical and Jazz musicians from Bergen County. All tickets sales and donations go to Habitat for Humanity for the rebuilding of Louisiana, Mississippi and other places of need and Pakistan and Guatemala.

Musicians who will perform include Englewinds, Leonia Chamber Musicians, the Brewer Ensemble, Tomoko Ohno, piano; Tim Horner, percussion; Rufus Reid, bass; Lauren Hooker, vocals and more. The program of classical and jazz will feature music by C.P.E. Bach, J.S. Bach, Sarah Davol, Tomoko Ohno, Tim Horner, and a world premier by Monte Morgenstern written for wind trio for the event.

Tickets are $25 and will be available in advance at Cedar Lane Cinemas during theater hours or at the door on the evening of the concert. Checks for tickets or donations should be made out to Habitat for Humanity. On the memo, indicate Flood Relief and state or area preferred. "If you read the biographies of each of the musicians involved in this event, you would say, 'Wow, such distinguished careers, and they live right here in Bergen County', said Sarah Davol, Director of Englewinds, and one of the organizers of the event. "The caliber of musicians is very high." The concert features the Cinema's 3-manual organ, Louisiana ragtime music, as well as original Classical and Jazz compositions including a premiere for wind trio written by Monte Morgenstern for the event.

Holy Name Hospital is offering a two-hour program on Wednesday, October 26th to help participants stop smoking permanently through behavior modification techniques and effective hypnotic suggestions. This relaxing, stress-free approach reduces withdrawal symptoms and helps to make lifestyle changes by focusing on increased self-esteem. The program consists of one two-hour session and includes a 30-day reinforcement audio tape. The first hour is dedicated to understanding the obstacles of change. The second hour will be devoted to helping you overcome these obstacles.

Holy Name Hospital Osteoporosis Exercise Program: Starts 10/24&25

New sessions of Holy Name Hospital's program for individuals with osteoporosis will be held from 5:15 to 6:15 PM starting on either Monday, October 24th, or Tuesday, October 25th. Each program lasts for six weeks. Classes are led by a physical therapist from the Rehabilitation Department.

Exercise is an important component of an osteoporosis prevention and treatment program. The classes focus on the proper progression of activity, how to stretch and strengthen muscles safely, and how to correct poor posture habits. Not only will exercise improve bone health, but it increases muscle strength, coordination, balance and leads to better overall health. Women and men older than age 35 can slow bone loss with regular exercise.

The fee is $85.00. A medical release from your physician and pre-payment are required at the time of registration. Class size is limited, register early. Teaneck High School, in cooperation with a wealth of sponsors, will hold Financial Health Day for senior citizens on Monday, October 24th from 12:30 to 5:00 PM at the high school, 100 Elizabeth Avenue off Queen Anne Road and Route 4 East.

The theme is Get Into Financial Shape, and workshops will cover such topics as Understanding Your Credit & Credit Report; Wealth Building; Social Security; New Jersey Pensions and Benefits; I'm Retired, So What's Next? What's In a Mortgage, and Catch-Up Strategies for Late Savers.

Professional presenters will lead these sessions but don't worry: There will be no solicitations of any kind! From 12:30 to 1:30 PM, lunch will be served at no charge, along with a presentation about Identity Theft delivered by representatives of the U.S. Secret Service. Seminars will take place from 1:40 to 5:00 PM, with mid-afternoon snacks provided.

Celebrate 80 years of Broadway with City Winds Trio! City Winds Trio will be performing a selection of Broadway hits from each decade 1890-1980. There will be a small discussion about what musical each piece came from and from what year.

City Winds Trio comprised of Flute, Oboe and Bassoon have performed on many distinguished concert series throughout the East coast. Teaneck Creek Conservancy Daylong Events: 10/23

ABOUT THE TEANECK CREEK CONSERVANCY The Teaneck Creek Conservancy, Inc. -- in close partnership with Bergen County -- is dedicated to the reclamation and revitalization of the lands and waters of a 46-acre property within Overpeck County Park for public use and enjoyment as a wildlife reserve, passive park, outdoor education and research center, and cultural destination. Activities conducted by the Conservancy include the creation of a 1.5-mile trail system for limited public access and passive recreation, which is under construction and is expected to be completed this year. The interior of the Conservancy is closed to the public until construction is completed. Teaneck New Theatre Presents"Breaking Legs":10/21-23,28-30

"Breaking Legs," the off-Broadway hit comedy by Tom Dulack, will be presented by Teaneck New Theatre in association with The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center (HCAC) on Friday and Saturday, October 21st, 22nd, 28th and 29th at 8:00 PM, and Sundays, October 23rd and 30th, at 3:00 PM. Greg Liosi directs the show, which will be performed at HCAC, 39 Broadway, Hackensack.

The term "break a leg" is associated with wishing good luck to actors, but the expression has a slightly different connotation when the world of the Mafia collides with the world of the theatre. The wacky fun begins when Terence O'Keefe (a college professor and playwright) approaches the father of Angie (his former student) to obtain financial backing for his new play. What O'Keefe doesn't know is that, in addition to owning a successful Italian restaurant, Angie's father Lou Graziano has an extended "family" made up of mobsters. Complications arise when flamboyant Angie falls for the unsuspecting playwright. The situation becomes even trickier when a minor thug "accidentally" dies and O'Keefe finds out who his backers really are. "Breaking Legs" keeps everyone in line by serving up pasta and mayhem in equal measure.

BCUA Tire Recycling and Computer / Electronics Event: 10/22 9AM-2PM

The Bergen County Utilities Authority will be conducting a tire recycling and computer / electronics event on Saturday, October 22nd from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute located at 281 Campgaw Road in Mahwah. Since 1995, the BCUA sponsored Tire Recycling Program has recycled over 229,462 tires. A few of the many uses for scrap tires are: safety flooring, commercial fishing equipment, dock and boat bumpers, truck bed mats, mud flaps, garbage and recycling containers, shoe soles, and even river bank stabilizers.

Bergen County residents may bring up to four tires per delivery. There is no charge for this service as all costs are grant funded. No commercial generators are permitted at Amnesty Collection Events.

Most consumers are unaware that computer and electronic equipment contains toxic materials and heavy metals. These materials, if thrown in the trash, will end up in a landfill or incinerated, potentially creating an unsafe environment. To reduce the environmental impact caused by improper disposal, and at the same time increase recycling in Bergen County, at Saturday's event, the BCUA will accept all types of computer and electronic equipment such as monitors, Computer Processing Units (CPU's), laptop computers, printers, keyboards, fax machines, hard drives, modems, speakers, power sources and wiring for recycling and reuse.

In celebration of Humanities Festival Week, the Teaneck Public Library will present a slide/lecture entitled "From the American Revolution to the Civil Rights Era: New Jersey Shows the Way" by Raymond Frey, Ph.D. this morning, October 21st at 10:30 AM in the library auditorium. This program was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Ever since the first Europeans came to America, New Jersey has played a significant role in the history of our country. It was the crossroads of the American Revolution, and played a pivotal role in the writing of the U.S. Constitution. It was home to the world's highest canal and the first railroad. New Jersey men fought bravely in the Civil War. At the turn of the twentieth century the state became an industrial powerhouse and the final destination of hundreds of thousands of immigrants. It suffered greatly during the Great Depression. It was the embarkation point for millions of men bound for Europe to fight in two world wars. It was scorched by the flames of race riots. New Jersey struggled with problems of environmental pollution, suburban sprawl, and changing demographics. Many New Jerseyans lost their lives on 9/11.

Unfortunately the state has sometimes become the butt of jokes by those in other states, but in fact there is no other state more “American" than ours. New Jersey's long history is American history, and has helped to define this nation from its very beginning.

Dr. Raymond Frey is Professor of History at Centenary College in Hackettstown, where he has just completed his tenure as Dean of the Faculty in order to complete several writing projects. Now in his fifteenth year at Centenary, he recently was appointed the Gates-Ferry Distinguished Lecturer. Dr. Frey holds graduate degrees in history and philosophy from Fordham University and Drew University. He published in August 2004 his important new book "New Jersey: A Journey of Discovery" and is presently completing a biography of first lady Bess Truman. He has also signed a contract to write a biography of Harry Truman.

This event is being held in memory of George Ohlandt: On July 12, 2004, Teaneck Police Officer George Ohlandt was diagnosed with liver cancer. George had been a Teaneck Police Officer for the last nine years. Prior to joining the Teaneck Police Department, he was a Corrections Officer with the Bergen County Sheriffs Department. Teaneck Library Lap Tine / Toddler Time Start: 10/20

The Teaneck Public Library's popular Babytime program is getting a makeover and will now be split into two separate programs, uniquely geared to the interests and abilities of the youngest library visitors.

Lap Time is for infants who are not yet walking. Moms and caregivers in attendance will hold the children on their laps as the librarian sings nursery rhymes, reads stories and engages child and caregiver in full-body motor activities. The program begins Thursday, October 20th at 11:00 AM.

Toddler Time, for toddlers up to the age of 30 months, offers a program more geared to the abilities of those youngsters who are walking. It is offered three times: Thursday at 9:30 AM or Fridays at either 9:30 AM or 11:00 AM. The programs begin Thursday, October 20th.

The Englewood and Teaneck Public Libraries will jointly host a free five-part reading and discussion series called "Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature - Identity and Imagination." The series explores Jewish literature and culture through scholar-led discussion of contemporary and classic books on a common theme. The Library's series will explore the theme of "Your Heart's Desire: Sex and Love in Jewish Literature." The library is one of 200 libraries nationwide receiving grants to host the series developed by Nextbook and the American Library Association. All dates are Wednesday evenings and the programs will begin each night at 7:00 PM.

The next program will explore "A Simple Story" by S. Y. Agnon and will be held on October 19th at the ENGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY, located at 31 Engle Street, just north of Palisade Avenue in ENGLEWOOD.

Professor Kenneth Libo, co-author of "World of Our Fathers" with Irving Howe and other books about Jewish history, will lead the programs, which will center around reader discussion. Dr. Libo, whose articles have appeared in the New York Times, Jewish History and other publications, has taught at the City college of New York and served as curator of curator of American Jewish history at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York, and the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.

Teaneck 2005 Municipal Services Guide Available in Print and Online

Teaneck's 2005 Municipal Services Guide is now available at the Township Clerk's Office in the Municipal Building, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. An online copy of the Guide is available at http://www.TeaneckNJGov.org/managersreport.pdf at the Township's web site.

This invaluable 52-page booklet contains a listing of all services provided by Teaneck Township, including phone numbers and hours of operation of each of the Departments. It also contains the Municipal Manager's 2004 Report, the 2005 Budget (including a budget and tax analysis, summaries of salaries, wages, other expenses, grants and revenues, the 2005 Capital Budget and Miscellaneous Anticipated Revenues) and the 2005 Directory of Teaneck's Municipal Services, providing details regarding each of the municipal departments, their organization and a summary of their activities in 2004.

Copies are also available at the Teaneck Public Library and at the Richard Rodda Community Center during their respective regular business hours.

FAIR Rebate Application Deadline is Tomorrow: 10/17

If you still haven't applied, the deadline to receive the FAIR rebate that you are entitled to is tomorrow, Monday, October 17th. Homeowners are eligible for FAIR rebates of up to $350, or up to $1200 for qualified seniors or disabled residents. Qualifying tenants can receive rebates of $75, or up to $825 for seniors or disabled. In order to receive these rebates, the absolute final deadline for applications is October 17th.

Any New Jersey resident who owned a home as their principal residence on October 1, 2004, had gross income of $200,000 or less, and paid property taxes on that home should be sure to file the FAIR Homeowner Rebate application. Eligible homeowners who haven't filed their FAIR rebate application yet can file online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation or by calling 1-877-658-2972.

October 16th-22nd is Teen Read Week, sponsored by the American Library Association. The theme for the week is "Get Real @ Your Library." Teaneck Library has planned several events for the week.

To carry out the theme of "Get Real" teens are invited to read a non-fiction book and write a short review. The reviews will be posted on the Internet.

On Tuesday evening, October 18th, students in grades 7 and up are invited to a jewelry making workshop at the Library. It will be hosted by Lori Neels. There is no fee for this program; materials will be provided.

For upperclassmen and college students, the library is hosting an evening with Josh Braff, author of "The Unthinkable Thoughts of Jacob Green." Braff will discuss his writing and his debut novel on Thursday, October 20th, at 7:30 PM. Today's global economy has been called by some a “race to the bottom,” meaning that eventually workers will be left with no protection from exploitation or unfair treatment by unregulated corporations. In conjunction with the art exhibit The Human Element: The Art of Labor, the Labor of Art, on Friday, October 14th at 7:00 PM at the Puffin Cultural Forum, a panel discussion entitled The Race to the Bottom: Labor in the Global Marketplace with special guests Hetty Rosenstein, “Organizer of the Year" at the AFL-CIO New Jersey State Convention; Amanda Teckman of the National Labor Committee and Sondra Youdelman of Community Voices Heard, will explore the future of the laborer in today's globalized economy.

Panelist Amanda Teckman works for the National Labor Committee which has been an advocate for higher wages and better working conditions in third world countries. The NLC tries to put a human face on the global economy by reporting gross violations of labor law and basic human rights in factories around the world. Their most recent campaign involves the He Yi factory in China, where workers are paid less than the minimum wage, with mandatory overtime, obligatory seven-day work weeks, and 18-20.5 hour shifts, producing "Bobblehead" dolls of major league players produced under licensing agreements with the NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA, Nascar and the Collegiate Licensing Company.

Sondra Youdelman is currently the Policy and Research Director of New York City-based Community Voices Heard (CVH). CVH is a membership organization of low-income individuals, mostly women who have been recipients of public assistance, working together to empower their families and communities. They use a multi-pronged strategy which includes community organizing, public education, public policy work, coalition building, leadership development, training low-income people about their rights, political education and direct-action issue campaigns.

Hetty Rosenstein is the President of Communications Workers of America (CWA) and founding member of the advocacy group New Jersey Citizen Action. CWA is America's largest communications and media union. It represents over 700,000 men and women in both private and public sectors.

The beautiful Seine River in France is a pleasure to sail! Join Audrey on a river ship whose journey starts at Honfluer in Normandy and sail up this waterway noting the scenery and historic sites along the way. The viewer will visit old abbeys, a medieval castle and quiet river towns along with a more detailed stop at Rouen, the lovely old city of Norman architecture and Joan of Arc. Visit Giverny, Monet's home and gardens as well, followed by Auvers, where Van Gogh spent the last months of his life and died. A brief glimpse of Paris will be the finale.

To take full advantage of the new $6 million Knowledge Initiative project of the State of New Jersey, workshops for entrepreneurs, small business owners, researchers, students, physicians and health providers in private practice are available at no cost at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Many small businesses cannot afford to purchase high-end business, science, technology and medical databases. Now, through New Jersey's Knowledge Initiative, there is Web access to a host of high-end databases. The research databases are available, free of cost, at every New Jersey college and university as well as at selected public libraries. The 45-minute workshops are designed to give an overview of the capabilities of these databases. On Friday, October 14th, there will be three back-to-back sessions offered at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 AM. If the succeeding workshop is not fully booked, attendees are welcome to stay for a repeat session.

Access is a critical part of the equation, but using this rich, new resource efficiently may require some guidance. Fairleigh Dickinson University Library is partnering with FDU's Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies to sponsor free workshops to individuals interested in learning more about these powerful resources. The instructor is Maria Kocylowsky, Head Business Librarian, Metropolitan Campus.

Workshops will be held in the computer laboratory at FDU's Edward Williams Hall, located at 150 Kotte Place in Hackensack. Teaneck Leaf Collection Season Underway: as of 10/11

Weekly curbside collection of garden debris ended October 6, 2005. Garden Debris pick-up will resume in January 2006. Remaining garden debris can be taken to the Recycling Depot for disposal.

It seems that summer just ended, but Leaf Collection season already began on October 11th and will continue through December 11th. Be sure to have all your leaves, grass clippings and small plant material raked out to the street on or before December 11th. Once the leaves have been picked up in your area after December 11th, the Township will not return to pick them up.

Do not place branches or large plant material with leaves as they are not suitable for composting with leaves, and could damage the street cleaning equipment. These will be collected as garden debris in January 2006, or you may bring them to the Recycling Center anytime it is open. Please refer to the recycling calendar for the garden debris pick-up schedule.

Veach's seat will be filled on an interim basis by the Council and a new Deputy Mayor will be selected. TEANECK - Deputy Mayor Deborah Veach has resigned her council seat to become the township prosecutor.

The Township Council unanimously appointed Veach to the municipal prosecutor post last week, shortly after receiving her resignation letter.

The council has not established a timeline for appointing her replacement, nor has it named a new deputy mayor.

Veach said she would miss serving on the council but that she could not pass up the opportunity to combine the knowledge she gained as a councilwoman with her courtroom experience. Veach worked as a prosecutor under Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau in the 1980s before going into private practice.

"I liked being a voice for the residents, and I'll miss the camaraderie on the council," said Veach, who won a seat on the council in 2000 and was reelected last year.

"I don't think I would have relinquished the honor if I didn't think I could make a greater contribution in my new role."

She will be paid $45,000 per year plus benefits in her new position.

The job became available when Howard Solomon, the prosecutor for the past 25 years, was appointed an administrative law judge.

Mayor Jacqueline Kates praised Veach as a devoted councilwoman who would benefit residents in her new role.

"The council meant more than anything except [her family] to her," Kates said.

"By offering herself to this position, she is making a big sacrifice.

"We are really going to benefit from having someone who we know is so highly qualified" as municipal prosecutor, Kates said.

The vacancy adds a fifth seat that will be up for grabs in next May's non-partisan election: four four-year terms plus Veach's unexpired two-year term.

There are seven council members, including the mayor and deputy mayor, whom the council chooses from among its ranks every two years.

Councilman Paul Ostrow said Veach's seat should be given to the person who finished as the runner-up in the last council election, which would be former Councilwoman Marie Warnke. Warnke said Saturday that she would like to return to the council.

Kates said it's too early to discuss potential successors.

"The council has not had an opportunity to sit down with the township attorney and discuss the replacement process," Kates said. "I want to make sure that we follow the process and that we do what's proper legally."

Kates said she hopes that the council will name a new deputy mayor at one of its next few meetings.

Teaneck Municipal Offices Closed; Library Open 9AM-5PM: 10/10

Teaneck Municipal Offices will be CLOSED on Monday in observance of Columbus Day. All full-time municipal employees will have the holiday off, with the exception of uniformed members of the Police and Fire Departments, who are on duty around the clock. The Recycling Depot is CLOSED and there will be no curbside pickup of garden debris or leaf collection. The Senior Center at the Richard Rodda Community Center is CLOSED, as well. Teaneck Public Schools will be OPEN, which includes courses and programs offered through the Teaneck Community Education Center. The Teaneck Public Library will be OPEN, though with abbreviated hours from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (instead of the usual 9:00 PM closing time).

Teaneck Greenway Annual Long Walk of Hackensack River: 10/9 9AM

The Friends of the Greenway will lead the annual walk along the full length of the Hackensack River through Teaneck, led by Jordan and Kathy Wouk on Sunday, October 9th starting at 9:00 AM. There is no charge for this walk, which starts at the southern end of Terhune Park (at the Bogota border) and continues north for 3½ miles to the old swing bridge at historic New Bridge Landing (at the New Milford border). Allow three to four hours for the full trip, though you can feel free to leave at any time.

The starting point of the walk is located near the tennis courts at the south side of Terhune Park, on River Road at the foot of Hillcrest Street. Ballots confirm Senate victory Thursday, October 6, 2005 By SCOTT FALLON STAFF WRITER

The tangled legal battle over Byron Baer's vacated Senate seat came to an end Wednesday with the opening of five ballots that gave the office to Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg.

Bergen County Democratic Committee members will hold a special election tonight to choose her successor in the Assembly.

Freeholder Valerie Huttle and Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes were the only two to announce their candidacies by early Wednesday evening.

Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa dropped out of the race, saying he was spent after the three-week battle with Weinberg over Baer's seat.

"If it had been a normal election and the Assembly seat came open, I'm sure I would have gone after it," he said. "It has been an extended and difficult experience, and I don't think I want to go through that again."

Wildes entered the race Wednesday afternoon after hearing that Zisa had dropped out. Wildes was unavailable for comment because he was observing Rosh Hashana. But a spokesman said Wildes believes he can represent the district best.

"Michael is the one who really speaks for independents," said the spokesman, Adam Foreman. "He has stood up to the party bosses for years."

Huttle, who has been endorsed by Weinberg, said she was looking forward to a fair but intense 24-hour campaign, regardless of who her opponent was.

"Valerie Huttle has been an independent voice on the Freeholder Board since she was elected," said Rocco Mazza, Huttle's legislative aide.

Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Fair Lawn, said he and his staff would oversee the election, much as they did for the Zisa-Weinberg contest, if all the parties agree to it.

Weinberg will face Republican Robert S. Lebovics, an Englewood surgeon, in the Nov. 8 election to fill the remaining two years of Baer's term.

The ballots were opened by Superior Court Judge Peter Doyne just hours after the state Supreme Court denied Zisa's bid to keep them sealed.

"If we've done nothing else, we have a new fresh voice that I think is going to be joining us in the Legislature," Weinberg said.

Teaneck offers behind-the-scenes glimpse Wednesday, October 5, 2005 By BRIAN ABERBACK STAFF WRITER

TEANECK - The township is offering residents a unique glimpse into the inner workings of government and the prominent issues that face town officials.

"Leadership Teaneck" is a 10-session course that tackles such topics as public policy and politics, land use, budget and finance, and educational issues. The program, in its second year, starts Oct. 31. The free, three-hour sessions are held on Monday nights at police headquarters.

The town, in conjunction with Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Board of Education, sponsors the workshops. They are a valuable tool for those thinking of running for local office or volunteering for a township advisory board, Mayor Jacqueline Kates said.

Kates said "Leadership Teaneck" is ideal for civics novices who want to learn about their town's day-to-day operations and long-term planning.

"We felt people needed an opportunity to know more about government, to feel involved," she said.

One class focuses on different forms of local government. Teaneck is one of a handful of towns in Bergen County in which mayor and council candidates do not run according to political party. Teaneck's non-partisan elections are held in May rather than November.

"It's useful for residents to understand our form of government because it is somewhat unique in New Jersey," Kates said.

The initiative grew out of a "visioning" process in 2003, a series of discussions meant to generate goals that would improve the township.

"Part of the discussion centered on how to get more people involved, whether it be on [volunteer] boards, running for office or just being more informed," Kates said. "I suggested that we have some kind of a program like this."

Kates approached FDU to help coordinate the course. Ron Calissi, executive associate dean at FDU's school of administrative science, said the university was happy to participate. The school, he said, shares the program's goal of raising public awareness and participation in government.

"It gives everybody an opportunity to learn about their community and its critical issues," Calissi said.

Calissi said he is not aware of other municipalities that offer a government 101 course for citizens.

"Teaneck is very progressive and should be commended," he said. "It's important that people get involved and know how their government works, and what they can do to help improve things."

Gervonn C. Romney Rice, a longtime resident who enrolled in "Leadership Teaneck" last year, said she felt more connected to the town after finishing the program.

"The information was interesting, and the speakers were really good," Rice said. "Whether you have ambitions [to run for office] or not, it's a great opportunity as a citizen to be fully aware of what's happening around you."

FAIR Rebates Distributed; Application Deadline is 10/17

Those residents who have already applied for their FAIR rebate should have already received a check (or notice of direct deposit) in the mail. If it hasn't arrived, you can check the status of your FAIR rebate check online at http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/fair/rebateinfo.htm or by calling 1-877-658-2972. Rebate check information for homeowners who are under 65 and not disabled will NOT be available either online or by phone until the fall. If you still haven't applied, the deadline is rapidly approaching. As part of the 2005-06 New Jersey budget, homeowners are eligible for FAIR rebates of up to $350, or up to $1200 for qualified seniors or disabled residents. Qualifying tenants can receive rebates of $75, or up to $825 for seniors or disabled. In order to receive these rebates, the final deadline for applications has been extended to October 17th.

To be eligible for the FAIR Tenant Rebate, an applicant must have been a New Jersey resident who rented and occupied a dwelling in New Jersey that was their principal residence on October 1, 2004, and have had gross income for 2004 of $100,000 or less. In addition, their principal residence must have been subject to local property taxes and be a full living unit with its own separate kitchen and bathroom. Eligible tenants who haven't filed their FAIR rebate application must complete and file the FAIR Rebate Application (For Tenants), Form TR-1040.

Checks for non-senior and non-disabled homeowners who file applications by the original deadline of August 15th are currently scheduled to be mailed on or before October 15th. Checks for applications filed between August 16th and the extended filing deadline of October 17th, will be issued as quickly as possible, but may not be included in the October distribution.

TRENTON, N.J. -- A 70-year-old grandmother appeared to be victorious Monday after a bitter intraparty quabble over who will assume a state Senate seat vacated earlier this month.

A Superior Court judge capped weeks of fighting among Bergen County Democrats by ruling Monday that five uncounted ballots in a special party organization election for senator should be opened, which likely will give the seat to Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg over Hackensack Police Chief Ken Zisa. However, Judge Peter E. Doyne stayed his ruling for 24 hours to allow the Bergen Democratic Committee time to appeal.

"I am happy and relieved," Weinberg said Monday.

Weinberg and Zisa's names were floated almost immediately as likely successors to Sen. Byron Baer, who served in the Legislature for decades before stepping down Sept. 8 due to declining health. Two years remain in his term.

The open seat set off a showdown between influential Bergen County Democratic Party boss Joseph Ferriero, who supported Zisa, and U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, who backed Weinberg.

Ferriero accused Corzine of meddling in county politics after the Democratic nominee for governor championed Weinberg's bid, citing her 14 years experience in the Legislature and her underrepresented gender. With just 19 women in the 120-member Legislature, New Jersey has one of the worst records in the country of electing women to state offices.

"Hopefully I will be replaced by a woman, and that will be a net increase of one in the number of women in the Legislature," Weinberg said.

Corzine also reacted favorably to news of the ruling.

"Sen. Corzine has from the beginning spoken about the importance of the inclusion of women in politics and public life and the necessity of counting votes. He certainly is glad the court agrees with the need to count all the votes," his spokeswoman, Ivette Mendez, said Monday.

Lawyers for Zisa and the Bergen County Democratic Organization are expected to appeal directly to the state Supreme Court. Dennis Oury, who represents the group, did not return a message to his law office Monday.

Doyne ordered the uncounted votes of five members of the Tenafly Democratic municipal committee to be counted Tuesday, and ordered county Democrats to plan a special session Oct. 6 to pick Weinberg's successor in the Assembly, should she emerge victorious in the Senate squabble.

"The final irony would be that they voted for Kenny Zisa," Weinberg said. "But that's hard to imagine. They all claim to be supporters of mine or they wouldn't have gone this far."

The matter has bounced through state courts for nearly three weeks, starting when Weinberg challenged Zisa's one-vote win in a county Democratic organization vote on Sept. 15. The ballots of five Tenafly representatives were disqualified on a technicality.

There is some urgency to resolve the matter. With 36 days left until Election Day, ballots for the 37th District Assembly race must be printed, either with Weinberg's name or that of her unnamed successor.

Weinberg said she won't be on hand Tuesday when the secret ballots are opened because she'll be in synagogue for Rosh Hashanah.

Undying Flame: Ballads and Songs of the Holocaust at Puffin: 10/1 8PM

How could an era of history so void of humanity as the Holocaust produce some of the most remarkable songs that haunt us to this day? What was there to sing about? Who composed the songs? Who sang? Who listened? On Saturday night, October 1st, at 8:00 PM at the Puffin Cultural Forum, folk singer Jerry Silverman will present a program of songs and readings from his book "The Undying Flame: Ballads and Songs of the Holocaust," in a search for the answers to these questions. The Forum is located at 20 East Oakdene Avenue (off of Teaneck Road) in Teaneck. There is a suggested donation of $5.00 at the door.

Jerry Silverman is one of America's outstanding folksingers, guitar teachers and most prolific authors of music books. He has published over 200 books, which have sold in the millions, including folk song collections, anthologies and method books for guitar, banjo and fiddle. He has taught hundreds and hundreds of people, young and old, the joys of making music on the guitar. He has performed in folksong concerts at schools, universities and concert halls in the U.S. and abroad.

During his performance the audience will be led on the terrible journey from the first Lager-Lied (concentration camp song) -- composed in the Börgermoor concentration camp in Germany in 1933 -- step by step through the inexorable and tragic events leading up to the Shoah, through the wartime years and up to the present. It is an eight-decade odyssey.

The songs sing of despair, hope, rage, resistance, and even humor, in the face of the unspeakable. Rare recordings of voices long still, salvaged from the abyss complement the live performance. After the presentation the members of the audience are invited to ask questions and offer comments. It has happened that survivors or children of survivors in the audience have first-hand recollections of the events recounted in some of the songs.

Silverman has utilized his extensive musicological and linguistic expertise in compiling and editing "The Undying Flame: Ballads & Songs of the Holocaust," a major work in the field of Holocaust scholarship, which contains 110 songs in 16 languages - Yiddish, German, Hebrew, Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, Ladino, Serbo-Croatian, Greek, Norwegian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Hungarian and English. The songs include the works of concentration camp prisoners and inhabitants of the ghettos of Eastern Europe as well anti-Fascist anthems inspired by the Spanish Civil War, Red Army songs and songs of Resistance fighters. Jerry Silverman's concert / lecture program based on the material in "The Undying Flame" presents many of these rare and moving songs for the first time ever. A CD of 14 songs is included with the book.

Among his best-selling books are "The Folk Song Encyclopedia" (a two-volume compilation of over 1,000 folk songs; words, music and guitar chords), "Ballads and Songs of the Civil War" (piano-vocal w/guitar chords), "The Guitar Player's Guide and Almanac" (a combined method book and survey of musical, technical and anecdotal information), "Of Thee I Sing" (patriotic American songs from the Revolutionary War to the present) and "The Undying Flame: Ballads and Songs of the Holocaust."

Martin Lederhandler, a retired Associated Press (AP) photographer, will give a slide-talk entitled “Sixty-five years with the Associated Press at the September 30th meeting of the Teaneck Library Friday Morning Group at 10:30 AM

Mr. Lederhandler has been shooting historical events and legendary figures for most of the 20th century and in doing so has become a legend himself.. Winston Churchill, Nikita Khrushchev, Fidel Castro, Haile Selassie, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, The Rosenbergs, mayors from Fiorello LaGuardia to Rudy Giuliani and every president from Herbert Hoover (retired) to Bill Clinton are just a sampling of people captured by Lederhandler's lens and his photographs have made front page news around the world.

Marty and his older brother, Harry, got into cameras as a teen-age hobby during the depression. He joined AP full-time in 1936 - his career was launched as he strolled across the George Washington Bridge and shot an award winning photograph of the cables stretching across the Hudson, for which he received $3.00. Lederhandler's career paralleled the march of technology from heavy, cumbersome Speed Graphics to high-speed film and motor-driven 35-mm cameras - and recently, to digital cameras.

Drafted by the Army in 1940, Lederhandler landed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division on June 6th, 1944. From his haunting images of the D-Day invasion to his photographs of the attack on the World Trade Center which made the cover of New York magazine and the cover of “September 11, 2001,” a best-selling book published by the magazine, Lederhandler has been an eyewitness to history.

N.J. unit brings joy to 'adopted' Iraqi schools Thursday, September 29, 2005 BY WAYNE WOOLLEY Star-Ledger Staff

TIKRIT, Iraq -- The little girl with the peach-colored dress and the Mickey Mouse flip-flops had run to the front gate of the Al Barudy Primary School before the first armored Humvee rolled to a stop.

By now, she knew what would be coming next: soldiers from the 50th Main Support Battalion carrying plastic bags stuffed with toys, and boxes overflowing with clothes and sneakers.

For members of the Teaneck-based New Jersey Army National Guard unit, the little girl's reaction this week was an indicator of the inroads they have made in just three visits to school they "adopted."

When the soldiers made their first visit to the school in February, no one emerged from the stone building to greet them, and the children seemed to relax only when they realized the troops weren't there to search for insurgents.

"By now, they know why we're here and they're glad to see us," said Capt. Richard Aviles, 35, of Rutherford. "Helping the schools was the most rewarding experience I've had here. I feel like I contributed something to this country."

The support battalion's main mission in Iraq is to haul goods, fix equipment and run a medical clinic for soldiers.

But its troops also took on the job of trying to improve relations with the Sunni Muslim residents of northern Tikrit by adopting the primary school and the Al Barudy School for Girls a few blocks away.

Missions like these fall under the heading of civil affairs and are expected of most units serving in Iraq.

The soldiers of the support battalion and its higher headquarters, the division support command of Somerset, say they've been glad to do it. The mission yesterday was the final visit to the two schools before the soldiers are scheduled to begin returning to the United States next month.

"This was the best day I've had in Iraq," Col. William Rochelle of Brick Township, commander of the division support command, said after the 84 soldiers involved in the mission returned to their base.

Most of the items the soldiers have delivered to the schools -- toys, toiletries, clothes and school supplies -- came from donations from around the United States. The most recent shipments bore postmarks from Red Bank, Milan, Minn., and dozens of points in between.

When the soldiers arrived at the first school, they unloaded the bags in a wide courtyard in the center of the school grounds. Chaos soon followed as children spilled out of classrooms and made a mad dash for the goods.

After noticing that one of the teachers was expecting a baby, Master Sgt. Minnie Hiller, the battalion's family-support coordinator, fished through the bags to find a pair of baby shoes and tiny sweater she knew were packed in the pile.

As the children swarmed around her, Hiller said the final visit was well-timed. Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, begins next week.

"To see the looks on these kids' faces is amazing," Hiller said. "For us to be here near the beginning of their holiday is even nicer."

In addition to the delivery of the packages, the support battalion made good on promises they had made to the headmistresses of each school on their first visit.

Both had asked for cabinets to store books and the soldiers arrived with four large wooden cabinets that unit members had made. The soldiers also delivered a swing set and seesaw to the primary school that welding experts from the unit had constructed.

The battalion also brought along a soldier and a defense contractor with the authority to follow through on other promises made on the first visit but that weren't fulfilled because the 42nd Infantry Division, which is responsible for all U.S. military operations in north central Iraq, ran out of civil affairs funds.

The primary school headmistress asked for an additional classroom and the girls' school headmistress asked for a concrete wall to be constructed around its building.

"We should be able to do that," said Maj. Dep Davis, a Missouri National Guard soldier assigned to the Department of Defense agency responsible for reconstruction projects in Iraq.

The troops spent about 20 minutes at the first school delivering supplies before taking a five-minute ride to the second school, where they stayed about 10 minutes.

The neighborhoods around the schools have single-floor cinder-block homes next to opulent two-story homes with colorful ceramic tiles on the windows and balconies.

On the first visit to the schools in February, at least several shots were fired at the battalion's convoy from the neighborhood. They haven't been shot at in the neighborhood since.

After the mission was over and the troops returned to their base, several gathered around a laptop computer and watched a video of the children ripping into the presents.

Hiller, who will return to the United States a few weeks before the rest of the battalion, said she will show the video to the soldiers' families.

"I want the families to see what these soldiers are doing over here," she said. "If they didn't do anything else, they made a difference at these schools."

THS Benefit Concert for Hurricane Katrina Victims: 9/29 7PM

Tonight, Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 PM, the student-run Teaneck High School Help the Homeless Club will hold a Concert to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. Performers will include individual singers and small singing groups, a rock band, individual dancers and small groups of dancers, and other students performers.

This will be the 15th benefit concert staged by the high school student organization, although the first for a tragedy of this magnitude. Over the years, students have raised nearly $25,000. Tickets will be $5, with all proceeds donated to hurricane victims.
